Healthcare uses an estimated 500 billion disposable gloves annually, leading to substantial greenhouse gas emissions and resource loss. In the Netherlands, university medical centres alone consume millions of nitrile gloves, contributing >500,000 kg CO₂ per year. Conventional nitrile gloves are non‑recyclable due to vulcanised synthetic rubbers and require up to 50 litres of water per 100‑glove box during production.
The GRIP‑study (Glove Redesign for Innovative Protection) advances a recyclable medical glove and a closed‑loop recovery system, starting in dentistry as a controlled, high‑use testbed and preparing scale‑up to hospitals. Gloovy Eco Gloves’ patent pending-recyclable copolymer gloves have shown up to 70% CO₂ reduction and 50L water savings per box in prior life‑cycle assessments (LCAs).
The GRIP-study will deliver (i) an optimized recyclable glove design, (ii) validated recycling recipes enabling high‑value re‑use (including new gloves), (iii) clinical performance and user‑acceptance evidence, and (iv) an implementation blueprint for scale‑up. For every 10,000 boxes, projected savings are 33,961 kg CO₂ and 500,000L water, equivalent to ~543 Amsterdam‑London flights (illustrative equivalence). Successful deployment in dentistry will de‑risk hospital roll‑out. The work directly contributes to circular economy goals through material substitution, high‑value end‑of‑life processing and circular design, while sustaining infection‑control standards.
