The KIN Hub MRA (hub of the Dutch Climate Research Initiative for the metropolitan region of Amsterdam) kicked off as a pilot at the beginning of 2026 as a pilot. Climate institute SEVEN has been appointed as the coordinator of this new collaboration. This makes SEVEN, together with regional knowledge institutes and its partners, the regional hub for speeding up fair and adaptive climate transitions.

What activities will we conduct?

The KIN-Hub MRA – launched by the Dutch Climate Research Initiative (KIN) – will act as a regional driver for climate transitions and serve three interconnected roles:

  • bringing together researchers, policymakers, professionals and societal organisations in a regional network that tackles concrete climate issues;
  • developing a modular training program for policymakers and professionals, focused on systems thinking, transdisciplinary collaboration, climate justice and climate adaptation;
  • combining existing and new knowledge from research and practice, translating it into actionable insights (such as policy briefs and tools), and communicating them within the region and through the national KIN network.

Who are our partners?

  • Climate Expertise Center of the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute (VU Amsterdam);
  • Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute);
  • Centre of Expertise City Net Zero of the Amsterdam University of Applied Science (HvA).

The Chief Science Office and the Program Climate Adaptation of the municipality of Amsterdam, as well as the Water Authority Amstel- Gooi & Vechtstreek, are also represented in the KIN HUB MRA.

The Amsterdam Sustainability Institute (ASI) at VU is a cross-faculty institute that connects researchers, teachers, and students who do (or want to do) research in sustainability to launch joint inter- and multidisciplinary research projects.

The Centre of Expertise City Net Zero at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is also a cross-faculty centre of expertise where lecturers, teacher-researchers and partners work together on a circular, climate-neutral and climate-resilient Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam.

The AMS Institute is a transdisciplinary institute focused on urban innovation, developing scientific solutions for a resilient, fair, and regenerative city and training the urban professionals of the future.

Why this collaboration?

We each individually already work with the ambition to accelerate the climate transition. We share a similar thematic focus; all our work is transdisciplinary and has partly overlapping, but also a lot of valuable complementary knowledge. Teaming up is a logical step to achieve that shared ambition. By actively combining our knowledge and networks in this collaboration and making them available to partnerships that are working on the climate transition in practice, we increase our impact.
